Dear Colleagues,

I'm thrilled to be able to report that the National Endowment for the
Humanities has again selected me to be among the seminar directors in
the 2004 NEH program of Summer Seminars for School Teachers.

The interdisciplinary seminar will be in English and will be on Balzac
and Zola: Esthetics and Ethics in the Novel. We'll focus
on close reading of The Wild Ass's Skin and Germinal as well as of
some of Balzac's and Zola's other texts, will make trips to two
museums, and will also be discussing narrative techniques and
character depiction in related film, literature, and art. No prior
experience with or exposure to Balzac and Zola is required to be
awarded one of the 15 seats in the seminar.

What is required is demonstrated excellence by K-12 educators who,
regardless of their primary disciplines, have a love for
literature, a longing to read and discuss novels by two of the world's
great novelists--even, I repeat, if it's their first exposure to
them--and
a strong desire to become immersed once again in the intellectual and
social environment of university living (along with the patience and
flexibility that such living often requires!).

If you know K-12 teachers, librarians, counselors, or administrators
who might be interested, in spending a month of intellectual inquiry
in this seminar held just down the road from Cape Cod, an hour from
Boston, and close to easy ferry rides to Martha's Vineyard and
Nantucket, then I hope you will (encourage them to) consider
contacting me and applying to participate in the seminar.

Complete details are available from my web site at:

http://home.earthlink.net/~blueheeler19/neh/seminarhomepage.html

Of course, there are many other seminars for our colleagues to
consider as well, and a general listing of all of them is available at
the NEH web site:

http://www.neh.gov/news/archive/20030819.html

In all cases, I encourage prospective applicants to contact the
directors of the seminars which interest them before making final
decisions about applying.

Thanks very much for your consideration.
